Hi folks,

Welcome to the Ordinary Theologian!

The purpose of this blog is to help ordinary people (like myself) learn how to rightly read, study and apply the Bible, explore different aspects of theology and in doing so, encounter the extraordinary God at its heart in the mundane and the every day.

Theology is often seen as a complex, difficult and overly academic discipline – inaccessible to Christians who haven’t been exposed to it and mostly irrelevant to daily life. Theologians are depicted as dull old men with big, long white beards in university ivory towers.

However, the moment any of us open our mouths to make a statement about God and say “God is…..”, we’re doing theology! In that sense, we’re ALL theologians. The main question is- are we good theologians or not?So this blog exists to help us become better theologians and Christ-pursuers as we follow the God of the Bible through His word, empowered by His Spirit. I want to make theology accessible to those of us who are laymen through:

  •  personal reflections and expositions of biblical texts
  • easy to understand advice on how to rightly study and read the Bible.
  • straightforward, down to earth explanations of theological terms and concepts.
  • articles on apologetics (e.g. giving a reasoned, intellectual defence of the Christian faith).
  • introductory articles on key events and figures from church history and their modern relevance.
  • discussions on cultural events through a biblical lense.
  • looking at the “head, heart and hands” model of discipleship to encourage better understanding and regular application of God’s word.
  • book reviews and resource / tool recommendations.

As we journey together, may we be captivated, challenged, humbled and inspired as we seek to understand and worship the awesome, mighty, majestic and loving God that we serve!

A bit about me….

My name is Michael. I’m a Bible believing, Bible practicing Christian and a member of Reality Church London. I am a 40-something, British born Nigerian living in London and the third born out of four children. By day, I work in I.T for a financial services organisation. By night (….well….afternoons!), I lead expository Bible studies privately and for my work Christian group. I have been known to “dabble” in playwriting and filmmaking )

I have a passion to help Christians dig deeper into the Scriptures, grow in their love for God and share (and defend) their faith effectively. I’m a YUGE movie and theatre fan, a reasonably avid reader and have varied musical tastes including Gospel, worship music, rock, hip hop and neo soul!

My statement of beliefs

  •  I believe in One God who exists in 3 co-equal, co-eternal Persons.
  • I believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God is both fully God and fully man.
  • I believe that Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit and experienced a miraculous virgin birth through His mother, Mary.
  • I believe that He lived a sinless, perfect life, died on the Cross as our substitute for our sin and had a bodily resurrection.
  • I believe in the second coming of Christ.
  • I believe in the final judgement, with those who reject Christ facing eternal death but those who trust in Christ will have eternal life.
  • I believe that the Bible is the inerrant, inspired Word of God.

I subscribe to both the Apostles and Nicene Creeds.

My secondary beliefs – I am a continuationist (e.g. I believe that all of the gifts of the Spirit continue in the modern church).

  •  I hold to a form of soft complementarianism (e.g. men and women are both made in God’s image, are equal but have differing roles in both the home and church).
